unit 8- developing technologies in film and tv industries (6)

Modern life has become easier and the people of the world have to thanks to the immense contribution of the internet technology to communication and information sharing.

the pros for analogue

Analogue recordings can be more accurate and natural sounding due to changes in air pressure being captured exactly as recorded.

Analog technology records wave forms as they are

Low cost and portable.Low cost and portable.

the cons for analogue
Analogue recordings are much harder and more time consuming to edit. You can’t chop up and edit pieces of audio within minutes.

Unwanted noise like tape hisser equipment noise is hard to get rid of. There is also no undo button so if something is accidentally deleted or wrongly edited then it’s gone for good.

Analogue equipment can be large, bulky and require lots of space to store it. it can also be extremely expensive to repair if it breaks down.

the pros for digital broadcasting

the pros of digitial broadcasting is the quality of the picture and sound. there is a much better sound and picture quality compared to analogue. through digtital broadcasting there is a transmission of High Definition TV and offers higher viewing resolution than traditional analogue systems.

digital broadcasting requires less bandwidth. the transition to digital TV is that it uses less bandwidth than analogue systems. so then the frequencies are freed up in the switchover to digital TV so this means it can be made available to other services and applications and also promoting efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum.

With standard analogue systems only a handful of channels can be received, but with digital TV, since its signals can be multiplexed, it is possible to offer a larger number of channels, which means a wider selection can be made available to consumers.

with digital broadcasting it can display high quality pictures from blu ray and game consoles plugged into the tv.

the cons for digital broadcasting

Another disadvantage of the digital broadcast is the loss of signals. With the old analog broadcast, you are probably used to bad picture when the weather is bad, but with the new digital one you will loose all your channels entirely. This means that you have to be getting the prefect TV signals all the time, because otherwise you will simply not get any picture at all.

The biggest disadvantage of the digital TV is the fact that you will need special equipment.

the internet

the internet is used a lot within the development of media and tv. many people now use the internet for legal services like netflix and illegal film sites. with this becoming so popular things like dvd stores are out of business.

communicate with people in virtually any parts of the world through the internet or e-mail, without having to leave his room.Any kinds of information on any topic under the sun is available on the internet.

lastly entertainments is a popular reasons why many people prefer to surf the internet. Downloading games or just surfing the celebrity websites are some of the uses people have discovered. however the internet can be very time consuming.

unit 8- broadcasting act (5)

The reason of the Act was to change the structure of British television the act came about after the finding from the Peacock Committee. which led directly to the abolition of the Independent Broadcasting Authority and its replacement with the Independent Television Commission and Radio Authority which they are now replaced by Ofcom.

Image result for ofcomThe Independent Television Commission also known as ITC was a licensed and regulated commercial television service in the UK, it regulated the existing 15 channels and the big network of ITV. It lasted from 1991 to 2003. In 2003 It became OFCOM which took the duties of ITC. They became one with the Radio Authority, office of telecommunications and the radio communication agency and now they regulate the TV and radio in the United Kingdom. This allowed for the final terrestrial channels to be created.

The Broadcasting Act was a reform package for British broadcasting, including television it Created 5th terrestrial television channel – now known as Five, and multi-channel satellite television.

Image result for margaret thatcherMargaret thatcher created this act when she came to power in 1979 there were just three channels – ITV1, BBC1 and BBC2 and so she wanted to change this as she had pressure from advertising industry for new broadcasts. she did this so broadcast market can be open to foreign companies.

she thought exposing it to the market would make it better and also because she didn't agree with certain public service broadcasters as she thought they were against her and the government.  the act contains the regulation of independent television.

Before the act, the BBC used to make its own 'in-house' programmes meaning that they produced everything themselves. When the act was then introduced the BBC was forced to outsource to other companies by 25%

the act had an impact on the 1990 broadcasting act on tv regulation because it allowed channels to be created and have more channels also tv companies became broadcasters rather than regulator. it also a licencing authority it allowed channel 5 to be created and have more growth in the satellite channels.

the act repealed the broadcasting Act 1981 and the Cable and Broadcasting Act 1984, amended the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1949, the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967, the Marine Broadcasting  Act 1967, and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988

however the act was opposed from many of the labour party and some of the conservative party who saw it as a representative of a decline in standards and saw it as an unwelcome Americanisation.

unit 8- ethics in relation to film and tv industries (4)

what are ethics?

ethics are the moral principles that define how a person or group acts. In the TV and Film Industry there are many different laws that have been made up. if a TV or film company does not behave ethically, there could be financial and legal problems so it is important not to break it. There are regulations set in place to help prevent people and viewers taking offence to sensitive material these topics cover many things. It is important that media agencies are careful to not show things that will offend the audience.

BBC code of practice

The Code of practice ensures relations between the BBC and independent producers are fair and transparent. It sets out the timetable for the negotiations of the commissioning agreement, the rights, programme prices, tariffs and payments. The Code of practice was agreed with Ofcom.

an example of where bbc have up held there code of practice is in the first episode of the documentary Life Inside Britain's Legal Red Light District, Sex, Drugs & Murder. the documentary is about the lives of sex workers in an area of Leeds where, if you're buying or selling sex, you won’t get arrested. this shows that the bbc are able show a sensitive topic that educates the audience and shows some peoples reality but in a way that is respectful to the participants in the show. the women are able to say there story without having anyone interpreting them.

Emerging social concerns

an emerging social concern is knife crime which has become a big issue in todays society. knife crime is something that has destroyed individuals lives as well as families.

a police and crime report from bbc says that Knife crime in london has risen to a four-year high following a relatively steady has increased since June 2014. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37412508

Most knife crime in London is no longer gang-related, as young people increasingly carry knives for protection, status and safeguarding “criminal interests”, the Metropolitan police commissioner has said. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/oct/13/most-london-knife-no-longer-gang-related-police-say

Vasilaki Kakkoan example of this would be 17 year old Vasilaki Kakko who was found with stab injuries in Yoke Close off North Road, Holloway at about 20:50 GMT on Monday evening in 2015 and was declared dead half an hour later, the Met said. A post-mortem examination found he died from a stab wound to the neck.

another example is 17 year-old found with multiple stab wounds in Battersea. Residents on Ingrave Street told the Evening Standard that they raised the alarm after being woken by the boy’s screams. “There were about six attackers one said. “They jumped out of the car and started chasing him immediately. He was on his bike but they caught up with him and stabbed him. this is just two examples out of the thousand knife crime cases. this is sad and seeing especially how young these young men were and most probably there attackers were around the same ages.

unit 8- vertical and horizontal integration (3)

Image result for vertical and horizontal integration mediavertical integration is where an institution has shares or owns each production. its where a company does many different jobs of creating the product/service and produces, distributed, and exhibited their films. an example would be Warner bros, they own there own film studios and they produce and market and distribute the films.  as well as that they have there own some of the cinemas in which they are shown. which uses horizontal Integration for its power and profits.

Image result for warner brosan example of a Warner bros production would be harry potter. which was created by warner bros than distributed by warner bros distribution then marketed by several time warner companies. this helps the production have a wider audience as they gain more profit.

another example would be sky pcl who provide triple play services of television, internet and phone service. earing up 7.8 billon pound in revenue.

Image result for sonyImage result for columbia pictureshorizontal integration is where a production company expands into other areas of one industry an example would be sony because it own companies like Columbia and rca but it also has holdings with companies like columbia pictures, sony computer entertainment, tristar films and have joined together with Panasonic to help with there technological hardware and together they created blu-ray disc. in the year 2016 sony made 72.06 billion us dollars.

Image result for comcastanother example would be comcast is the largest broadcasting and cable TV company in the world. comcast own NBC, universal filmed entertainment, comcast corporations. comcast have made a positive impact overall and every year there investing more into the businesses and gaining from that. they have helped more than one company to produce films so they are horizontally integrated.
